Turns out that there were a couple of issues with IMAP_Tree when 
allow_folders was turned off.  These have been fixed in HEAD.

You will need to track the code to figure out the issue.  I can't
reproduce this and can't begin to debug without further information.
Sorry, the config-option



$conf['user']['allow_folders'] = true;



was set to false. Now it work's perfectly.
