From RFC 1176:
In all search criteria which use strings, a message matches the
criteria if the string is a *case-independent* substring of that
field.
For me, searching for 'foo' and 'FOO' returns the same subset of messages.

seems to be case sensitive, which does not seem logical to me -
perhaps it should be made case insensitive?

containing the text "123456", and if so, how to specify the wildcards,
e.g. "*123456*" or "%123456%" etc.
