It may be worth extending this bounty to a per-identity option rather than a per-user option with SMTP authentication (SSL?) - see ~~ticket 574~~.

Every user should be able to use a different SMTP server. I use an IMAP server + horde for my family. Now my mother got an gmx-account, my father uses yahoo, i prefer the mail-adress from my HostEurope webspace,... Now if I enter the GMX SMTP server my father can't send emails because the server refuses it (because of his yahoo FROM-adress).
