We haven't figured out yet why the messages were missing from his
trash folder. The suggestion was made to me that there should be a
confirmation message, so that's why I submitted this ticket.

Well, the problem then is that there was nothing in the trash folder,
not that there wasn't a confirmation... why was that?

As the user who had this misfortune, the  files were purged (i.e.
there was nothing in the trash folder. All I am asking is to have a
confirm message. In the case reported there was none.

How would you set this threshold, though? I'd be fine with a general
"confirm deletion of message" prompt, but we already do that for POP -
the whole point of a trash folder (or the more standard mark as
deleted) is that it's undoable. So I'm not in favor of this.

We have had several cases where users have accidentally clicked the
"Check All/None" button (top left above the checkboxes) while trying
to click the "Delete" button. They end up deleting all the mail on the
page and have to restore it from their Trash folder ... and if they
panic and log out, the deleted messages are gone.

Perhaps if more than, say, five messages are selected, the Delete
button could display a javascript confirmation box before proceeding
with the Delete.  eg. "You have (N) messages selected. Are you sure
you want to delete them?"
