we further tracked the problem. it is in fact NOT a problem with dovecot (where we had an additional unrelated problem), but with activesync alone. fixed with: https://github.com/horde/ActiveSync/pull/2 https://github.com/maintaina-com/ActiveSync/commit/fb7b3840b73f300bd46e6ce5ab7413f9e96f649b

I cannot reproduce this on any of my test setups or my production system, which is running dovecot 2.3.7.2 on Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS. I can load that email fine in the Gmail app connected to horde via ActiveSync as well as in the "Nine" app, which is my daily driver.

attached the mail which triggeres the error and the log from activesynclog and the log from dovecot
