Thank you very much for your time! Will try to upgrade the whole 
system and see how it goes.
It's possible, though honestly this is a strange one.

Either way, we're not going to track down a bug we can't reproduce 
on such an old version.

Feel free to reopen this ticket if this persists after you have 
updated to a newer version.

I just noticed that according to the bug report, you're running IMP 
6.1.7. Is that true? Are the other packages equally old? IMP 6.1.7 
was released almost 5 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if this 
will lead to all kind of problems running on modern PHP (by the way, 
which one?)

PHP is not very modern actually either we are running 5.3.3
do you reckon that if we upgrade IMP and php version the form will 
work differently in the wrong username scenario?

when user tries to login with the wrong username the login form is 
just cleared and not showing any messages eg bad username or password
the login works as expected when user types the wrong password
