As far as why you are being asked on each login, that is unclear from
the information you have provided, some code tracing would be needed
to see why that value is not being honored. You are sure it's the
task to purge the sent mail and not rename the sent mail or purge old
sent mail folders?

global preference purge_sentmail_interval set to 0, and also the user
preference in the database set to 0.
Besides this, I think login task is dangerous. I have no use for it
and I don't know who would, I think should be removed altogether. I
want to remove it to prevent users from accidentally wiping their sent
mail, how can this be disabled completely?
I'm not sure what version of horde or imp I have, since it was
installed via pear.
