IMP doesn't modify messages (and really can't - IMAP doesn't allow for
modifying existing messages). This is something going on with your
ISP's mail server.

Case:

If I open an email using my webmail and the email have an attachment
the extention of the attached file will be changed when I later
download the email to my Outlook 2003 SP1. Going back to my webmail
the attachment is alright. It only happens to the emails I first have
opend in my webmail. If I don't open the email the attachment is OK
when downloading to Outlook.
