For git, "git whatchanged" may be one of the ways to get this 
information efficiently.

We now have a timeline view of individual files (e.g. 
http://git.horde.org/h/chora/horde-git/-/browse/horde/index.php?ws=1). 
We should have that kind of view for directories, and for the whole 
repository, so that someone can just go to the root and see the last 
thing that happened, no matter where in the repository it happened.

This probably has some, if not all, of the same infrastructure as 
generating RSS feeds for repositories (Bug: 4401).
