Non-breaking spaces aren't the way to go here semantically certainly
- adding left and right padding to #view_title would be much better.
For me the arrows have plenty of space, though - what theme are you
using?
I'm seeing it with Tango Blue.  I just did a quick check of other themes,

and they don't seem to have the same problem.

The left and right arrows to choose the previous/next time period in 
day/week/month/year view butt right up against the time period.  It 
looks cleaner with an nbsp inserted between the arrows and the title 
of what's being viewed.  I'm attaching a dample patch to 
kronolith/templates/day/head.inc in case it's not clear what I mean.
