You need to set your sidebar to refresh (in your Horde - "Global" - Options).

Upon logging in, the number of new mail messages appear in parens by the MAIL and INBOX menu items. After checking and reading the new messages, the count doesn't refresh to reflect they are no longer new, instead the number stays static until logging out and back in.
