Not that you wouldn't have thought to look, but are the sources
visible in the addressbooks pref?
Yes, they are (dumb me), and here's the issue as far I as I can see
it: I had the "addressbooks" preference not set. Without the shared
address book, all address books available are displayed. With the
shared address book, only this one is displayed.
After cleaning out my prefs I was no longer able to reproduce this. My
guess is that I had some bogus preferences that enabled only the
shared address book. Since all address books are enabled automatically
if none are enabled intentionally, I could see all address books as
soon as I removed the shared source from sources.php.
As a side note: I can't deselect all address books.
This is fixed now.

All. If they were only from the same backend, they would be shared too.
Actually, what I meant was if they all used the same underlaying
driver. In other words, if only your sql based sources vanished when
enabling shares on a sql source etc...

Regardless, I am unable to reproduce this.  I have configured two sql
sources - localsql_shared and localsql_notshared.  Both sources are
visible and act as expected.  In addition, I also have an IMSP source
(that I tested both as shared and not-shared), the favorites driver,
pref driver, and the group membership driver enabled and I can see
them all.

Are you seeing *all* non-shared address books disappear or just those
that use the same back end as the one that is shared?

As soon as I have one address book in Turba that has use_shares
enabled, all non-shared address books disappear and only the shared
address book is left.
