Resolved in CVS - Turba did not correctly detect it was adding to a list.

Trying to add a contact to a contact list results instead in an entirely new contact list being created with a name like "localsql:ba95f989d3b4d140a7bbc5cf51db960d". The new list does have the selected contact(s) added to it, however.
