Basics seem to work, but if I release an article that was previosly 
unpublished, I get this notice:

I've committed a reorganization of the date handling code and the 
release stuff, and included an upgrade script. Things seem like 
they're workin well as far as I've gone, but I don't use the email 
delivery stuff, so it'd be great if you can give me some feedback on 
how that's working for you now.

After the recent changes, the publishing functionality/release 
management is broken. I can no longer write articles without releasing 
them. If setting a release date in the future (which I don't want 
actually), the form doesn't remember this value when I edit the 
article later. Same for the "release now" checkbox which is always 
checked when editing articles. Email notifications aren't sent at all.
