This is a vague complaint at best, and it goes directly against the experience of countless users. And your theory is unrelated to anything that really affects an IMAP client.

Attachments aren't handled correctly. This is especially evident with pdf files that will often be unreadable after they have been downloaded through IMP. I have seen this before in other scripts where the cause was that the scripts didn't convert double dots (single dots are escaped that way at the beginning of a line by mail servers) back to single dots.
