I've looked at the source and I've considered that it would require 
havier code modification, because there is only LIKE test (*value*). I 
don't feel I could do it. Therefore I modified the code to provide 
such a feature only for myself because this modification was slighty 
more ulgy :-o.

When I choose a letter in the Browse page, the LDAP driver fetches all 
the contacts. The filtering is applied only in the PHP script. That is 
too ineffecient when I have thousands contacts. I don't see any 
technical problem why the filtering shouldn't be done on the server 
(LDAP) side.
