Even when I log out and log in again there are still 4 unread messages.

I do not have a trash folder.

There is a preference for how often the sidebar reloads. If you want
it to be instantaneous, use DIMP.

When I delete an unread email, the counter in the folder sidebar
won't change. It still shows 4 unread mails although I have no unread
mails in the inbox.
Check your trash folder and you'll probably find that there are 4
unread messages in there.
