I think at this point I agree, at least in outcome, that reading email and reading feeds are different activities.

I would like to reject this. IMP is designed to exclusively read from mail stores. This is just way too much abstraction for my taste. If feeds need to be displayed, that is the job of a feed reading application. I see zero advantage of allowing IMP to do this.
