This *is* already a configuration option, because admins can set default values for this preference.

Hm, I think it would be a good idea to make this configurable (on a per config/installation basis, not as a user setting): On the one hand some people might experience performance issues (we do not - at least so far), on the other hand I think this is the behaviour the user would expect ("if I add someone's free/busy info to the address book, it should be used when looking for free/busy informtion").

If you are interrested, I could change the patch and make it a config option.

We have previously rejected functionality like this because it can be pretty performance-intensive to search every available address book.

This is a feature enhancement patch for what I originally thought was a bug (see bug 6429) ...

If no address book search sources are set in the preferences (search_sources), use all available address books for searching the addresses and for looking up free/busy.

If you think this patch is ok, it might also be interresting for imp (did not have a look at the imp code, but I know I had to configure the address books there, too).
