This doesn't work because you can no longer specify the header name now.

You should indeed make the "char" setting optional and use a numerical 
comparison if the admin didn't provide it. You would need to document 
that in conf.xml of course.

The following two patches allow for a numerical Spam-Score comparison
for the ingo "Spam Filtering" option al alternative to the already
existing Spam-Level option.
Here is the conf.xml patch for it.
