This is the expected behavior, If you click outside of the check box only the row is selected.

When viewing the Inbox, you can select a group of messages by clicking in the check box to the left of the message. However, if the mouse pointer is slightly outside of the checkbox, then all previously selected messages are de-selected and only the current row is selected. My use case: When I open email, the first think I want to do is delete the 50+ spam messages I get every day. But as I go through selecting all the messages I want to delete, I inevitable click slightly outside the check box, and de-select everything. It's rather frustrating and I would really like to see this issue fixed.
