Sending mail works for me with your changes but the mail is still not
saved in the sent-mail folder. Can you reproduce this?
Yes, but that has nothing to do with this issue.

I went ahead and removed the whitespace anyway.  Not adding changelog
entry since I can't reproduce locally.

If you delete the blank or null-character after the recipient's
address the mail is sent but does also not show up in the
sent-mail-folder.
I can verify there is a blank space after the added address, but this
is stripped out in the sending process.  I have no issues sending
without removing this space.

You try to send a mail via the mobile interface and choose the
recipient from the auto-completion proposals. Then the recipient is
added but after the recipient's address there is a blank or
null-character added instead of a comma which happens in the
"desktop"-interface. When you press Send a popup appears saying
"Invalid E-Mail-Address ( )". The mail is furthermore not saved in the
sent-mail-folder.

If you delete the blank or null-character after the recipient's
address the mail is sent but does also not show up in the
sent-mail-folder.
