Me thinks this is over-configuration.

What about this patch? Default would be, to display the owner, but the
user can hide the information on demand by preferences.

Adding the user names to shared calendars is the only way to
distinguish different calendars with the same name, so this won't be
changed.
We could display the user's real name instead of his user name
though, this would probably make those names shorter too.
What about adding a tooltip with the username? Or maybe it could be
configurable via conf.php/pref?

Our users were complaining about an confusing and overloaded sidebar
in kronolith, because in shared calendars section the mailaddress (in
our setup the username) of the owner is added to the calendars name.

My solution is to add a shorter name to the inline javascript, which
is displayed in the sidebar. However the information about the owner
is not lost; it will still be available, when viewing calendars'
details.

Is this a proper fix for you to take over in upstream, so I won't need
to patch every version?
