It uses the default date format of your current locale. This is 
necessary because we cannot parse all possible date formats from the 
preferences, let alone that you could even make up your own.

Hi,

I have my Horde preferences for date display set to the dd/mm/yyyy 
equivalent. This setting is used on the main calendar display of 
kronolith when it shows the current date in the top left corner of the 
page. However, when you view an existing event or create a new event, 
the date display defaults to mm/dd/yyyy.
