we are using version 4.3.9

This only seems to happen in Japanese that I have seen; but I am glad
to hear that version 5 should be improved

So far this issue has only been found with Japanese:

if you send an email while using the Japanese interface, the sent
email isn't copied in the "sent" folder. Instead, a new folder with
foreign characters is created, and the Japanese sent mail is copied
into it (right below inbox).
Are you using IMP 4?  If so, the sent-mail folder will be translated
by default to whatever language you are currently using.

IMP 5 has rewritten special mailboxes support, which allows definition
of separate mailbox names and display names.
