What about just left-aligning the controls? There are some other
layouts I've seen that do a good job here. I'll try and take a look.
It's not high priority though.

loading indicator causes the (centered) controls to shift. This is
poor UI; most people won't want to (or be able to) click the buttons
again while the load is going, but having buttons shift around doesn't
give a good feel. We should put the load indicator somewhere else, or
stick it to one of the sides, or something.
