Since it talks the memcache protocol, you could trasparently use a 
couchbase db instead of the sql database where you needs persistence 
and speed.
Sure.  But I doubt any developer needs this feature, so a patch 
providing a new backend driver would be much appreciated.

Couchbase (ex membase) is a scalable nosql database with features like 
replica, HA and persistent storage.
By default it uses its own libraries, but it's also possible to use a 
special proxy (moxi) in front of the couchbase backend in order to use 
emecache applications.
Since it talks the memcache protocol, you could trasparently use a 
couchbase db instead of the sql database where you needs persistence 
and speed.
