Since this is a local problem with your system, you have to track this
down yourself, e.g. by using xdebug profiling.
If you need help with that, you can hire a Horde consultant, see
http://www.horde.org/consulting/

We use horde 3.3.8 with kronolith 2.3.4.  When we connect thunderbird
2 + lightning 0.8 or thunderbird 3 with lightning 1.0b2 to a
horde/kronolith with the rpc.php link it takes a variable time to get
to see all the calendar items in lightning.  Sometimes it takes up to
15 minutes, sometimes the calendar never shows up, sometimes only
partially.  If we load the same calendar in e.g. zarafa or sogo we get
a normal loading time.  The size of the ics is around 300K big.  We
will be happy to give you a user/test environment so that you can
reproduce the problem as we are stuck in a migration from exchange to
horde because of this problem.  If you start working on this bug, we
can also upload you an example ics file we are having problems with.
