general consensus that we need to add per-calendar colors as an
option. Given that, is there any reason to keep this as a separate
request?

But if there is a per-calender-colors ticket, by all means close this
one, no need for dupes.

calendars to have a default category that is applied to all their
events. This would allow users to assign a color to these calenders,
thus making them easier to differntiate.
There was a patch some time ago, i doubt it still is patchable:
