I see. You didn't mention any error message.

How are they "protected"? You edit any, even read-only events by
saving a copy.
Example: I have the calendar for German holidays in my upcoming
events. Now today is "International Men's Day" (congrats btw.) and
there is an edit link in the portal block. When you click on it, you
get a big fat "Permission denied".
I know how to create/copy/... events. Just what sence make this edit
link in the portal block if it will definatly result in an error
message?

Portal block "Upcoming Events" has an "edit" link for events of
holiday calendars. As those (at least in my setup) are protected
against changes, the edit button should be removed.
