msglistHeader is hidden on vertical layout so there isn't any way to sort or select all messages on vertical layout. I could contribute with a patch but I am not sure how do you want to fix this. Should I create some buttons on dimpAction bar to Sort and Select messages? Or should I create/adapt a msglistHeader for the vertical layout?

There can't be a header for the mailbox listing in the vertical layout because it doesn't make sense (another reason why the vertical layout is not a good solution IMHO). Sorting should either be done by an addition to the Other Actions Menu or by a right click context menu (although not entirely sure where; in the mailbox listing? added to the list of actions when right-clicking a message?)

I understand the latter, but strictly as an argument for familiarity. e.g. The Outlook-like display is *familiar* to users so they like it. Thinking about this a bit more, it does make sense to add a basic header-ish field to the top of the horizontal message list - it now contains the select all checkbox and the link to change Sort.
