There are some PHP installations in the wild where PEAR_INSTALL_DIR is empty (cf. http://pear.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=4597). However, some Horde components do rely on it being properly set (kronolith/lib/Driver/holidays.php for example). To allow to have this work, it is probably advisable to let the user configure the location of the PEAR libraries. The patch attached addresses this issue and adds a new configuration variable 'peardir'.

There is only one single place where we use PEAR_INSTALL_DIR, in holiday.php. And this is only due to the incomplete design of Date_Holidays, see http://pear.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=10221

You're right, of course. But for affected Horde users this patch (combined with a corresponding holidays.php patch which I have written but not submitted yet) is currently the only way to make displaying holidays work. The PEAR bug you provided the link for has not received much attention for more than a year...

That's sad, I know, but it would probably speed things up if you provide a patch for that issue. I'd rather not want to hack around deficiencies in external packages, especially if they are still beta code, due to change.
