Examining the code, it appears that this is done intentionally in line 37 of ansel/templates/slideshow/slideshow.inc with a str_replace command to allow the javascript section of the slideshow page to be formatted properly. Not a huge deal, but can cause some confusion to a user trying to read the caption.
