Okay, I was misreading you somewhat. The menubar link won't be changed from the current behavior. The current behavior is consistent across all screens. Your request puts it into either impossible to predict or vastly unintuitive behaviors for non-day view pages.

Go to Calendar, Month view, Click on a day (the day number) to view that day, click "New event" in the menu above, the new event screen is displayed. The start on date is set to today's date, and not the day (date) I clicked on in month view.
