Bold-->*Bold* is standard, has been since the invention of the typewriter.

Bold-->BOLD is a bug.

Using HTML editor whih bold, italic, underlined and/or combinations
of these tages, when a user switches to plain text editor, the text
becomes UPPERCASE and/or surrounded by back-slashes.
This is the desired behavior.  Bold text is indicated in all CAPS,
italicized text is indicated by putting the words between / /, and
underlined text is indicated by putting the words between _ _.  It is
a way to preserve some of the formatting when switching from a display
that is less feature-rich.

Please try at least with the latest IMP 4.1 stable release. HTML
editing is also much better in HEAD if you can try that.
