I'm a little confused now.

* Do the IMP settings apply to the DIMP as well?

IMP itself only needs about 3 to 4 seconds to display a very large
mail folder - if DIMP uses equal settings shouldn't it be as fast as
IMP?

I will try changing the settings of IMP. Maybe that helps but this
wouldn't be the solution.

Under administration/setup/imp/mail server try setting the "on slower
servers...." to a resonable figure (I have mine set to 200)

and under "Mailbox and fetchmail" try unticking the first 3 boxes to
stop IMP looking up and displaying detailed info.

have you looked in your email/imap logs for errors?

Looks like mail sorting by arrival time is activated because if I try
to open the folder I see the little triangle close to the "Datum"
(resp. Date?) field.

In fact there are about 20 folders in my Maildir and I'm not able to
display the content of the folder conatining > 3000 Mails. All other
folders display just fine and I don't have to wait longer than ~ 3
seconds. But the other folders contain only < 300 Mails.

Maybe this has something to do with the amount of data in a maildir
(including attachments - there should be some big ones) and is not
directly related to the amount of mails?

Working fine here - about 4 seconds to open a box with over 6000
mails. This drops to sub 2 seconds on subsequent openings within the
same session, no doubt due to all the work that has gone into the
caching system.

What sort-order are you using? Anything other than arrival time can
hammer performance. There is a setting to force sort by arrival time
for folders containing more than a configurable number of emails.

The time needed to display a dir including about 3300 mails is very
long - or it just doesn't work.

At the Moment I've been waiting for about 5 hours.

I'm using a snapshot of DIMP (2006/05/09).
