This problem is most probably in the VFS library, not in Gollem, you 
need to tell us the Horde version you are using.

And please check your horde logs, where you should find a more 
complete error message.

For the backend selection, remove all the backends you don't need, or 
move the preferred backend to the top, or configure the 'preferred' 
setting correctly.

I cannot upload files. When I click submit, it returns a "DB Error: 
Unknown error"

and my files won't upload. Also, When I select to have backend setting 
set to none, or hidden, it defaults to FTP and I would like it to 
default to SQL.

My back-end is sql: everything DATA and Permissions. I can create 
folders just fine.
