Yes, seems like so. Only to return last messages you need 1 instead of 0 in API call. Otherwise it is OK.

This is now possible by calling forums/getThreads($forum_name, 'message_timestamp', 0).

API to return last 10 (or 20, or whatever) messages (_not_ threads) from specified forum.
