Okay, let's just say this can be done with the custom icon hooks, then.

I tend to agree.

I really don't like this in the sidebar, it takes up too much space.

I've gone the route of always showing the (unseen/total) in most of
our views so that  the display of polled folders is consistent.

How about this one? There's one without the pin for the regular
folder icon, and both are from the gnome-stock collection that we've
been getting most of the icons from lately. I'm sure I can dig up an
open folder one, too.
As long as they have similar icons for our trash & spam folders as
well, it looks good.

If the color matches, fine. And we should make sure that the special
icons like trash take precedence over the polled icons.

Now to find an appropriate icon. :)

Sounds good to me too.

Also, Jan as well, what about having a different icon for a folder
that's polled? That seems less intrusive to me and would work in the
sidebar as well...
Sounds good.

Kevin: for you, does this need to be a grouping like show unsubscribe?
Or would adding a CSS class of "folderPolled" (for example) that'd
show in the folder navigator and portal block work?

new mail in some of the folders.  So maybe a way to show that a
folder is polled there in the sidebar?
I don't think this is a good idea, I don't want the sidebar folder
list to be too overloaded.
I agree.
portal block summary, if there's new mail.  If instead you can toggle
something that says "Show me Folders to Check for New Mail", they can
grasp that easier..
I have no strong opinion about this. What do others think?
It's fine by me, I guess. I don't feel strongly about it either.

No idea what you mean, I always get the message count for polled
folder in the folders navigator, even if they don't contain any
messages.
After closer review, I'm not sure either :(  I think I must be getting
delusional, because right there in the folder navigator is (0/368).  I
know this caused me problems somewhere in the past - the only place I
can find now that would have the behavior that I described is the left
sidebar.  Folders with new messages are bold and have a number.
Unpolled folders and folders with no new messages appear the same.  I
think that must be it - there were folders I missed and I kept
watching the sidebar because I knew there should be new mail in some
of the folders.  So maybe a way to show that a folder is polled there
in the sidebar?
IMP doesn't go through the poll list and tries to look for messages,
but goes through all displayed folders and looks up if they should be
polled. So this not an issue, and in fact the wanted behaviour
because the folder might simply be unsubscribed at the moment.
But you can end up with dead entries in nav_poll.  I've got an
interesting mishmash of  folders leftover from old mail servers, test
mail servers, test Horde installs, etc. that have accumulated in
nav_poll.  And the issue remains that with lots of folders, I still
don't have a succint way to determine all the folders that are being
polled.  The underlying issue there is not for me but for my users.
Most users need some sort of logical grouping of folders, to
understand that "these folders are being checked for new messages".
Its difficult for them to grasp the concept of IMAP subscriptions, let
alone know that if a folder has a (number/total) after it in the
Folder Navigator, it will show up bold in the sidebar and the mail
portal block summary, if there's new mail.  If instead you can toggle
something that says "Show me Folders to Check for New Mail", they can
grasp that easier..

checked.  But from time to time, I miss one or two, and its
impossible to tell if I have a folder set to be checked or not, if
the folder has no new messages in it.  It looks the same whether I
have it set to poll or not.

Also, how are "dead" folders handled?  By that I mean folders that
have been added to the list to be polled, but later deleted (maybe by
IMP, maybe by some other program).  Or maybe the key in the  IMP

I have about 150 folders, of which I'm only interested in real-time
stats for about two dozen of them.  So I have those folders set to
Check Folders for New Mail.  The problem is from time to time, I
decide to go on a cleaning spree, so I'll select all folders to check
for new mail, so I can get a message per folder count.  I'll clean out
folders that have high message counts.  And then I go back and
deselect all, and then manually choose which folders to check for new
mail again.  Most of the time, I manage to get all the folders I want
checked.  But from time to time, I miss one or two, and its impossible
to tell if I have a folder set to be checked or not, if the folder has
no new messages in it.  It looks the same whether I have it set to
poll or not.

So some way to be able to tell that a folder is being polled for new
mail would be extremely helpful - italicize it, or I don't know what.
Or in the spirit of IMAP subscriptions, a show Polled Folders/show All
link.

Also, how are "dead" folders handled?  By that I mean folders that
have been added to the list to be polled, but later deleted (maybe by
IMP, maybe by some other program).  Or maybe the key in the  IMP
servers.php was changed, so the poll list is no longer valid.  It
would be nice to have a way to expose the internals of  nav_poll, in a
user-friendly way.
