No, because it can only execute javascript, and only a limited set. It might be possible to save the content with AJAX calls, but this is a lot of work.

I tried body.onunload() [http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/interact/scripts.html#adef-onunload] and it can issue action with mozilla 1.7.10, when you try to load other page close the browsing tab. Cannot it be used here?

when composing a message, you close the window (or tab) by error JS alert : "Do you want to save this message in draft ?"
