When new mail arrives, you can choose to have nothing done or to have a windows popup letting you know. Gmail has a feature that I believe can be interesting, which is changing the name of the program to show a (1), (2) .... deppending of the number of new messages you may have. Mail::Inbox (4) as the name of the window...
