The silver theme works much better though, because the background 
image is high enough to cover at least two lines.

Sure. The only solution that makes sense. You can try playing with
"overflow" in that theme. Limiting the subject in a single theme is
acceptable.

Not really.  There is a CSS solution that cause ellipsis [...] to be 
added to text that overflows a DOM element, but this solution does not 
work on all browsers (strangely enough, IIRC, this is one of the few 
CSS items that are supported by IE and not by FF/Opera/Safari).

It only looks that weird in this theme, because it uses a background 
image for the header line. I don't want to lose all that information 
just because a single theme doesn't look that perfect.

it would be really nice to shorten the subject line, so that it will 
be everytime one line because with a long subject it looks terrible. 
have a look at the screenshot. maybe it is possible to shorten the 
subject based on the window width and append three dots at the end
